Paris Saint-Germain Stun Tottenham to Lift First Super Cup

Paris Saint Germain have claimed their first ever Super Cup following their victory in Udine, where they completed a dramatic last minute comeback to defeat Tottenham 4-3 on penalties. Tottenham appeared in control for the majority of the game after taking the lead in the 39th minute with a rebound from Micky Van De Ven. This was then followed by another goal just 3 minutes into the second half, with Cristian Romero’s header adding to Spurs’ lead and making PSG’s hopes of a comeback so much dimmer.
However, to the shock of all fans, the final portion is where PSG took charge with a low driven blow from outside the box by Lee Kang being the spark needed to bring the team back to life. The final goal which was needed to equalise was scored by substitute, Gonçalo Ramos. Ousmane Dembélé in the 4th minute of extra time crossed the ball towards Ramos, who with pinpoint accuracy headed it past Vicario to make the score 2-2 giving PSG another chance of fighting for victory in a tense penalty shoot out.
Similarly to the initial game, Tottenham took the lead in the shoot out, But nerves later got the better of them with Van de Ven failing to score a much-needed goal thanks to Chevalier's low dive. A second miss by Mathys Tel shifted the balance in PSG’s favour. Nuno Mendes’s decisive spot kick sealed Tottenham’s fate, securing the win for the Parisian side.
This result marks a significant moment in the club’s history, making them the only French club to win the trophy, on top of their first ever UCL victory being a monumental achievement.
The final result was certainly unexpected, with PSG’s head coach himself acknowledging that his side were second best for a majority of the game. However, he praised them for their resilience and ability to fight back when it was needed most.
For Thomas Frank, this loss will be an unfortunate way to start the season with his new club. Tottenham have failed to secure European silverware since 1984 leaving fans and players alike disappointed once more. Will this loss motivate Spurs to push for success in their coming 2025/2026 campaign?
