Senegal Crowned Champions After Dramatic AFCON Final Showdown

In an action-packed and dramatic final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Senegal were crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 in the final.

The decisive goal came in extra time, when Pape Gueye struck from the edge of the box in the 93rd minute, helping Senegal clinch their second title, their first since 2021.

The match itself was full of memorable moments and talk, both on and off the pitch. After 90 minutes of no goals, tensions boiled over in normal time after Morocco were awarded a penalty following a VAR decision, putting Senegal at risk of defeat. Following a save by Senegal’s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, the score remained level and pushed the match into extra time. Shortly after the penalty decision was made, Senegal’s players walked off the field in protest of a disallowed goal and the referee's decision. This incident halted play for 17 minutes and drew strong reactions from fans and officials alike.

This controversial finish was further amplified by fan unrest in the stands and the scenes on the pitch, with Senegal’s coach later receiving a ban and a fine for the nation’s football federation.

Despite the off-pitch drama, Senegal’s victory marks a powerful achievement for the nation, reaffirming their status as one of Africa’s greats. The Teranga Lions demonstrated resilience and determination under the leadership of their captain Kalidou Koulibaly and will be sure to remember this moment for years to come.

For Morocco, the night ended in heartbreak, narrowly missing out on their first Cup of Nations title in more than five decades. They were, however, praised for how they hosted the tournament and will be sure to demonstrate more of this when they co-host the World Cup in 4 years’ time. Will the Atlas Lions bounce back in the next AFCON?
